Portals
Portals are doorways of blue light, and the only way in and out of New Haven. They are hidden in caves in the wilderness, and each one is powered by a Portal Stone.
How they work
A portal has to be activated from both sides. So when a long-dead portal suddenly comes back to life, it means someone on the other side opened it.
The Portal Stone is a blue gemstone. It is both the key to a portal and its failsafe.

New Haven opens the portal from its side for just one minute. If New Haven is ever at risk, whoever carries the Portal Stone must destroy it. That duty normally belongs to the Captain.

Once open, the portal holds until the Stone is inserted on this side, and both sides must remove their Stones to close it. When the mansion's portal malfunctions and will not close, Kiera goes back alone to pull out the Stone.
