The City
The City is where most of The Marked Ones takes place. While the rest of the world drowns in Hezekiah's war, the City stays on the sidelines, guarded by its Swordmasters and closed to the Marked Ones.
Life in the City
The City is ruled by Lord Wrazen, and its Swordmasters serve as both its army and its police. They train at the Swordmaster Academy, serve in squads of six, and earn performance credits that decide who gets promoted. Under military law, helping a Marked One is treason, and the penalty is death.
The City once took in Marked refugees and even ran a refugee centre for them. That ended with the Black Night Incident. Today, any Marked One found in the City is imprisoned for life without trial, and the Swordmasters hunt down those being smuggled in from outside.
Gideon sees it plainly: “While the whole world is drowned in chaos, our City just stands on the sidewalk and watches like a bypasser.”
